The Scranton Police Department started its K9 Unit in 1981 with two k9 teams. It is now a specialized unit made up of five k9 teams. Each team operates on a city-wide basis.
The K9 Unit may be used for the following incidents:
- Building searches
- Tracking and searching for missing persons, suspects or evidence
- Apprehension of criminal suspects
- Narcotic raids and searches
- Crowd control for violent and/or unruly crowds
- Handler & Officer Protection
